«I was trying to discover, with the signs, some imaginary thing tht would be inscribed on nearly monochromatic backgrounds. (…) Then, little by little, the signs turned to shapes; the backgrounds to space. By dint of correcting, destroying, starting up again, something seemed to be rising up in me. My painting seemed to start moving, stirring. Shapes sprang up and I dared using colours that I had been afraid of so far.»
