Tefaf, the antique side of New York

The large art fair opens May 10-14: four Italian galleries participating. And alongside the exhibition, auction sales shine: from Francis Bacon to Magritte, from Brice Marden to Allen Jones

In the vocabulary of art, May is synonymous with New York. After an April where Milan (Miart), Venice (Biennale) and Brussels (Art Brussels) took center stage, galleries, collectors and professionals in the sector are heading overseas. This week, attention is catalyzed by one of the most important events in the world: Tefaf, in its US edition. From 10 to 14 May, the queen of ancient art fairs becomes the point of reference for modern and contemporary art, bringing together 90 galleries at the Park Avenue Armory. Works of art, design, jewels and antiquities from the 20th and 21st centuries distributed throughout the 55 thousand square meters of space, one of the most coveted in the entire artistic programme. Italy is well represented, bringing a poker of first-rate exhibitors such as Galleria Continua, Galleria d'Arte Maggiore Gam, which inaugurated the Paris branch, Massimodecarlo and Tornabuoni Arte. Among the novelties this year, 10 new galleries are joining the fair, including David Kordansky and Salon 94 from the States, Samuel Osborne from the United Kingdom and Page from South Korea. There is no shortage of space dedicated to works of art on paper, as demonstrated by the historic Kasmin Gallery with refined works from the Seventies by Lee Krasner and Robert Motherwell.
