Giorgio Morandi returns to the heart of the debate on Metaphysical art in Metafisica / Metafisiche, the major exhibition curated by Vincenzo Trione at Palazzo Reale in Milan. For the occasion, Galleria d'Arte Maggiore g.a.m. has loaned a work that perfectly embodies Morandi's ability to reveal the silent and enigmatic essence of everyday objects. Displayed alongside more than 400 works by key protagonists and later interpreters of the Metaphysical movement, the painting contributes to a broader reflection on the enduring influence of Metaphysical thought from the twentieth century to the present day.

Curated by Vincenzo Trione, Metafisica / Metafisiche explores the legacy of Metaphysical art through a dialogue between its founding masters and a wide range of national and international artists who inherited and reinterpreted its themes from the twentieth century to the present day. At the heart of the exhibition is the historic group formed in Ferrara in 1917, which brought together Giorgio Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio, Carlo Carrà and Filippo de Pisis. Their vision laid the foundations for one of the most influential artistic movements of the twentieth century.

The exhibition presents an extraordinary body of works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, design objects, architectural models, illustrations and magazines, drawn from the collections of more than 150 public and private institutions.

Given the scale of the project, the exhibition extends beyond Palazzo Reale and involves several major cultural institutions across Milan, including Museo del Novecento, Gallerie d'Italia and Grande Brera – Palazzo Citterio.

One of the exhibition's most compelling aspects is its demonstration of how the themes and protagonists of Metaphysical art continue to inspire contemporary artists from around the world. Their reinterpretations move beyond traditional media such as painting and sculpture, embracing contemporary forms of expression including video, photography, fashion, theatre and music. In this sense, particular attention is devoted to Giorgio Morandi, whose artistic legacy remains central to the exhibition's broader narrative. Alongside several works presented at Palazzo Reale, lots of references and homages from contemporary artists featured the other venues, such as South African artist William Kentridge's Remembering Morandi at Palazzo Citterio, Gianni Berengo Gardin's photographic series dedicated to Morandi's studio at Gallerie d'Italia.

On the occasion of this major group exhibition Maggiore g.a.m. has loaned one of Giorgio Morandi's celebrated Still Lifes from the 1940s, a work that embodies the essence of the Metaphysical vision. Through its suspended atmosphere and contemplative stillness, the painting reflects Morandi's pursuit of the hidden, almost spectral nature of ordinary objects - an essence that emerges only when we look beyond their physical appearance. Within the exhibition, Natura Morta enters into dialogue with several iconic works by some of the most important figures associated with Metaphysical art, including Giorgio de Chirico, revealing the richness and continuing relevance of this artistic language.

Produced by Palazzo Reale, Museo del Novecento, Grande Brera – Palazzo Citterio and Gallerie d'Italia, Metafisica / Metafisiche is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture as part of the cultural programme accompanying the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
