Ferrari First 28 Times (On the Monument)

Panorama, April 29, 1999
It was ready last September, but because of ordinary bureaucratic delays it remained stored in Ferrari’s warehouses until today. It is the monument dedicated to Enzo Ferrari and his company, a bronze sculpture more than five meters tall and composed of 28 scaled-down models of the Ferrari F40. The author is the French artist Arman (real name Armand Fernandez), commissioned by the Municipality of Imola and Sagis, the company that currently manages the racetrack.

What is the meaning of the work? “To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Ferrari’s first victory in a Grand Prix and the centenary of the birth of the founder of the Prancing Horse car manufacturer,” explains Franco Calarota, owner of the Galleria d’Arte Maggiore in Bologna and promoter of the initiative.

The sculpture, worth 1.5 million dollars (over 2.7 billion lire), will be installed right at the entrance of the Santerno track, the Imola circuit that has always been tied to the history of the Reds from Maranello. The inauguration and ceremony will take place on April 30, the first day of practice for the San Marino Grand Prix. With one strong hope shared by managers, fans and sportspeople alike: that Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine will crown the celebration with a victory.
