The American art fair took place at Javits Center for the second year in a row with great international participation and more wide-ranging artworks
Galleries and international art collectors came back to New York for the 28th edition of The Armory Show after travelling restrictions have ended. The modern and contemporary art fair took place at Javits Center Sept. 9 - 11 for the second year in a row. This is a change both in terms of timing and location, considering that it used to take place in March at the historical location of Piers 92 and 94. Javits Center, though, allows to show more wide-ranging artworks.
At the same time as The Armory Show was held, other art fairs took place in New York, such as Independent (Sept. 8-11), which launched a new edition focused on 33 artist from the 1900s to be rediscovered. Furthermore, the art week matched New York Fashion Week and the US Open, so New York was back in the international spotlight.
A global audience
«People from every origin and culture attended the fair», Alessia Calarota from Galleria d'Arte Maggiore in Bologna said. «It's wonderful to see that love for art is gaining a more increasing audience! So many people attended The Armory Show: both contemporary and historized art aroused a lot of interest. There was a queue at our booth to watch Wim Wender's video artwork and we sold a copy of it to Centre Pompidou, while some works by Claudine Drai are now in the Guerlain collection and Sissi's in an important private American collection. On the historical side, Giorgio Morandi's works are still a safe and affordable captivating investment. We also sold an oil painting by Roberto Matta, who is exhibited in the new MoMA set-up along with his pupils Gorky and Rothko.»
